Customer Story: The Halal Guys and the Dost 80 Blades Behind Many Franchise Locations

When a franchise grows, every new location needs the same equipment, and every location needs parts. The Halal Guys show what that looks like for gyro slicers. Franchise locations from California to New York have ordered from Gyrosknife since 2018.

This story is built from our own order history. It shows what franchise locations buy from us, and what any franchisee can learn from it.

Each location buys for itself

In a franchise, locations often order on their own accounts. That is what we see with The Halal Guys: each store or buyer has its own account with us, and each one reorders what it needs.

It works because the locations run the same machine. A blade, fuse or screw for a Dost 80 in Long Beach is the same part as one for a Dost 80 in Dallas.

Blades: the part that keeps coming back

Across The Halal Guys accounts, the Dost 80 smooth blade is by far the most common item in recent orders. That makes sense. Blades are the main running cost of any electric gyro knife.

A smooth blade is sharpened once a day and gets a little smaller each time. Replace it when its diameter has worn down by 5 to 7 mm. For an 80 mm blade, that is when it measures about 75 mm. Busy locations go through blades faster, so they keep spares on hand.

Some locations also order serrated blades. The East Brunswick, New Jersey account, for example, has bought Dost 80 serrated blades, Dost 120 serrated blades and the UYAR 90 mm Hybrid Fine Tooth Ultracut blade. Most of our customers use serrated blades on beef or lamb, and they replace them when they get dull.

The small parts list

Besides blades, The Halal Guys' recent orders include:

Replacement fuse for the Dost 80

These are small, inexpensive parts, but each one can stop a slicer. A missing thumbscrew or a used-up fuse means a machine sitting on the counter during service. That is why we stock them for every model. See Dost 80 parts or all parts.

What franchisees can take from this

If you are opening or running a franchise location, a few simple habits help:

  • Run the same slicer as the rest of the system. Parts, blades and training carry over.
  • Order spare blades before you need them. Keep at least one on the shelf.
  • Keep a fuse in the fuse drawer. Every slicer ships with a spare. Replace it as soon as it is used.
  • Don't wash the motor. Water getting into the motor housing is the most common repair we see. None of our slicers are dishwasher safe.
  • Use one supplier for parts and service. We are the authorized service provider for every slicer we sell, so the same team that sells your parts also repairs your machine.

Our blade fit guide and sharpening and maintenance guide cover the details.

Other franchise and multi-store customers

The Halal Guys are one of several groups that order across locations. Luna Grill orders through three accounts in California and Texas (read Luna Grill's story), and Falafel & Grill orders through two accounts in Chicago. Shawarma shops in Canada order too. Jerusalem Shawarma in Calgary has bought Devran blades and sharpening stones from us since 2017.
